What is DECA?
DECA is a student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. DECA members have an opportunity to compete at the district, state, and international levels in various areas of marketing and management. Students also have an opportunity to earn scholarships through DECA.
DECA has impacted the lives of over ten million students, educators, school administrators, and business professionals since it was founded in 1946. It is represented internationally by every US state, Canada, Mexico, Guam, Puerto Rico, and numerous other countries throughout the world. PA DECA has over 4,700 members and is subdivided into 85 chapters, each containing multiple chapters (schools) throughout the state. Last year, the North Allegheny Chapter of DECA had 145 student members!
Interested students in grades 9 - 12, alumni, and professionals may join DECA by signing up on Mrs. Sullivan’s page on the NA Website, the NASH or NAI Student Information pages, or by using the QR Code on DECA promotional flyers. A district conference is held every year in December at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Airport Hotel located in Moon Township. Competing members at the district conference take a 100 question career cluster exam, solve a case problem, and roleplay their solution with a judge. An awards ceremony is held before the close of the conference announcing the top three individuals and the top two teams in each event, who are eligible to compete at the DECA State Conference.
DECA State Conference
Approximately 65 students compete at the DECA State Conference each year, which is held in Hershey PA in late February. Most students take a career cluster exam related to their area of competition, and solve two case problems, and roleplay their solution with a judge. Some students conduct market research independently or in teams, prepare a market research report prior to the conference. Other students compete in project management, professional selling and consulting, or online events. Students also have the opportunity to attend business-related workshops. Depending on PA membership, the top 3 or 4 individuals or teams in each category are eligible to compete at the DECA International Conference.
