Spelling Program
This year in second grade we will continue to use the spelling that is embedded in the Harcourt Reading Program. At the beginning of each Harcourt reading lesson your child will take a spelling pretest based on the spelling pattern being introduced. This day will vary depending upon how many days it takes to cover each reading lesson. The score of the pretest will determine which list of words your child should learn. That pretest will come home the day it is given. The basic list consists of words that fit the spelling pattern being introduced. The challenge list consists of words that fit the spelling pattern but are generally more difficult to spell.
At the end of the Harcourt reading lesson ALL children will be tested on both the basic and challenge list. However, if your child was assigned to study only the basic list, as determined by the pretest, then only the basic list will be graded, out of 12 points. Therefore, any incorrectly spelled challenge words will not be counted against their grade. All children will take the challenge list for the exposure, but their grade is only on their preassigned words.
Super Spelling Homework"Super Spelling" is given the same day as the pretest and is usually due about 3-4 days after. This assignment will be written in each child's assignment book daily until the due date. This spelling homework enables students to use many styles of learning other than paper and pencil. The students are required to complete three activities of their choice (you may also create your own and write it on the homework page), get a parent signature, and turn in the homework by the due date. The "work" doesn't need to be handed in-only the signed Super Spelling paper with the three highlighted boxes. During the week your child will be engaged in various activities in the classroom that reinforce the spelling strategy too.
Spelling Lists can be found in Blackboard>Class Content>Reading/ELA. Blackboard will be available August 23, 2021.
