    TITLE I COMMUNICATION ARTS SUPPORT PROGRAM

     

    SCHOOL PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICY

     

    I. Title I Requirement: This policy was developed with and agreed upon by the parents of Title I children. This policy was distributed to all parents.

    ·         Parent suggestions/input provided at Hosack's Title I Meeting on October 3, 2016 along with input from the reading specialist were used to develop Hosack's school policy.

    ·         The Policy with signature sheet will be given to all parents when they attend their fall conferences during the week of November 7th.

    ·         Policy will be placed on School web-site.

    II. This policy was written in understandable format and provided in a language that parents can understand

     

    • The policy will be written in terms to ensure easy understanding of every section.
    • At November conferences, reading specialist will ask if any parent will require documents to be written in languages other than English.
    • If translation is required, contact will be made with high school foreign language teachers or English as a Second Language teacher to assist with translation. Technology is available that can translate documents, if the need arises.

    III. This policy describes how parents will be involved in the planning, review and improvement of the Parent Involvement Policy.

    • Hosack parents will be involved in the planning, review and improvement of the Parent Involvement Policy.
    • For Review and Improvement – the policy will be updated every year in October at the District Title I meeting.
    • Additionally, parents will be asked if they feel any changes are needed.

    IV. The policy states that an annual meeting will be held to tell parents about the program and how children qualify.

    V. This policy states that parent conferences will be held at different times during the day.

    • Parent conferences will be held at different times during the year. September notification will be done by phone.
    • November conferences are held during the morning, afternoon, and evening.
    • January conferences are done by phone or in person at parent's convenience.
    • March or April conferences are held at the end of the third nine weeks.
    • End of year conferences are held in May/June

     

    VI. This policy states that Title I funds may be used to pay reasonable and necessary expenses associated with parent involvement activities such as transportation and childcare to enable parents to participate in school-related meetings and training sessions.

    • Parents will be informed that transportation and day care are available when the reading specialist conducts parent conferences.
    • If child care is requested, arrangements may be made for the parent to bring their children to school or Title I funds will reimburse for babysitting costs. If transportation is requested, a staff member will pick the parent up or arrange carpooling.

    VII. This policy describes how parents will be involved in the planning, review and improvement of the school's Title I program.

    • For school planning, see #1 and 3 above. The information from Hosack's School Parent Involvement Policy provides direction for Hosack's school program.
    • At all Title I conferences, parents are asked if they believe anything needs to be improved in the program to help them or their child.
    • Parents complete an end-of-year survey or questionnaire.

    VIII. This policy describes how the school will provide Title I parents with timely information about the Title I program.

    • Curriculum Night – in September, parents can receive general Title I information.
    • Title I Annual District and building meetings - provide more specific Title I information.
    • Parent conferences are offered each year. See #5. At November conferences, parents receive Parent Letter and Signature Notification Form.
    • Title I student assessment data will be sent home every marking period

     

    IX. The policy will describe how the school will provide parents of participating children with a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.

    • Curriculum Night – Curriculum guides for each grade level are online for all parents. Teachers explain, in detail, the Harcourt Reading Program and student expectations.
    • Report Cards – every 9 weeks
    • Monthly Informal Curriculum Based Assessments that identify clear levels of proficiency. All data is shared with parents including strategies and suggestions for home use.

    X. The policy describes how the school will provide assistance to parents in understanding the state's academic content standards and student achievement standards, local academic assessments and how to monitor a child's progress and work with teachers to improve the achievement of their children.

    • District book available that matches State Standards with Scope and Sequence of our Harcourt reading curriculum identifies what needs to be mastered at each level.
    • Report Cards – provide input from the Curriculum Based Assessments.
    • Iowa (ITBS), CogAT and PSSA scores – parent reports mailed home.
    • Parent Conferences throughout the year helps parent/school monitor progress.

    XI. The policy states that the school will provide, if requested by parents, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible.

    • ESAP– Elementary Students Assistance Program – available upon parent request for concerns about a specific child.
    • Principal Parent Advisory Council – for general concerns
    • Immediate conference – convened upon request to the teacher, principal, reading specialist or guidance counselor.

     

     

     

    XII. The policy states that a school parent compact was jointly developed with parents and the compact outlines how parents, the entire school staff and students will share in the responsibility for improved student achievement.

    • At Hosack's building meeting in October – parents will write the parent piece of this document and will review and edit the school's commitment in the Compact
    • Title I students in grades 1 and 2 will contribute ideas for student's commitment in the Compact.
    • The information will be written and given to parents at November conferences with a signature slip and can be discussed at any time.

    XIII. The policy describes how the school provides materials and training to help parents to work with their children to improve their children's achievement, such as literacy training and using technology, as appropriate, to foster parent involvement.

    • Northland Library – information is provided about their programs to encourage reading and help each child get a Library card.
    • Summer Rainbow of Reading Program.
    • Reading Incentive Program Accelerated Reader.
    • Individual Training Module done in October.
    • Book-It Reading Program October – May.

    XIV. The policy states that the school ensures that information related to school and parent programs, meetings and other activities will be sent to the parents of participating children in a format and in a language that parents can understand.

    • Refer to #2 above to address foreign language issues
    • Information is sent via newsletter called Hosack Happenings/Thursday E-blast, and NA's official school calendar all online.
    • Parents can contact Hosack's principal, classroom teachers, reading specialist or building secretary to clarify information at any time.
