Guidelines on Remote Learning for Elementary School Students (Revised May 14, 2020)
Student Attendance
Every school day, students must submit daily attendance by completing an online remote attendance process. Parents/guardians of Kindergarten students are to submit attendance for their child since they do not have a school-issued device.
- The process for daily attendance is for students to log into TigerID and click on the Remote Learning Check-In App. More detailed directions are available at https://nasd.school/StudentRemoteCheckIn. Elementary students should check-in by 1:30 p.m.
Follow your teachers’ directions to locate assignments. Each teacher will have a quick link on their landing page entitled “Remote Learning” and by clicking here, parents/guardians and students can find information related to how that specific teacher is presenting Remote Learning activities and lessons. Teachers will be using one of the following locations to house assignments.
- Google Classroom
- Website
- Emailed directly to parents/guardians (if sending to students, parents/guardians must be copied on all emails)
- Other platforms they are currently using and have been communicated with their students and parents/guardians (i.e. Schoology, SeeSaw)
Grading Procedures
Similar to the changes for grades 2-5 where report card grades were changed to pass/fail rather a letter grade, marking indicators will also be modified for the fourth quarter of the 2019-2020 school year as follows:
Special Area Classes
Report cards will use the following grades for marking indicators.
- Appropriate Progress
- Needs Improvement
- The “Strength” marking indicators will not be utilized during the fourth quarter of the 2019-2020 school year
Grades 2-5 Students
Students in these grades typically receive letter grades at the end of each quarter. For the fourth quarter grade, students will receive either a grade of “”Pass” or “Fail.” A “Pass” grade will be for any students who would normally receive an A, B, C, or D letter grade for the fourth quarter. A “Fail” grade will be assigned to any student who receives 60% or lower on their final fourth quarter average. A “Pass” grade will calculate as 100% and a “Fail” grade will calculate as 60% on the fourth quarter report card.
Grades K, 1, and Special Area Classes at the Elementary Level
Report cards will use the following grades for marking indicators for academic subject areas.
- Appropriate Progress
- Needs Improvement
- The “Strength” marking indicators will not be utilized during the fourth quarter of the 2019-2020 school year.
- Some marking indicators such as “Skills for Success” will not be assessed for the fourth quarter of the 2019-2020 school year.
School Day Schedule
Daily assignments will continue to be scheduled upon a two-day rotation based on an even calendar day or an odd calendar day.
- Even Calendar Day - ELA and Social Studies will be assigned
- Odd Calendar Day - Math and Science will be assigned
- Special Area (Art, Library, Music, PE,) activities/lessons will be posted on Monday and students will have the entire week to complete all four assignments by Sunday evening prior to the next week.
- Instruction, class assignments, and homework should be designed to fall within the below listed timeframes.
- 15 and 30 minutes per subject area for K-2 students
- 25 and 45 minutes per subject area for 3-5 students
- Teachers will also be available via email during the typical school day in the event that students or parents/guardians have questions
- Teachers will have lesson assignments available by 8:00 a.m. on Monday. If the lesson is for multiple days, teachers will note this in the lesson explanation for students. Assignments will be posted for the week on Monday. This will allow students to self-pace themselves throughout the week. The assignments can be due anytime throughout the week or at the end of the week, however this will be reflected in the expectations posted on Monday.
- Lessons may include webcam-enabled (or iPad camera) video or audio that is live between students and staff beginning the week of April 13, 2020.
- Counselors will be available during the school day via email for support. They will also continue with any appointments previously made via conference call. The counselors/social workers will share the conference line via email with those students who are scheduled to meet with them. Reference this document to access counselor contact information.

Technology Services
Technology Services has added telephone support for remote learning for staff, students, and families. Hardware issues will be addressed through mail-based hardware exchanges.
