5th Grade Lesson PlansStudents that are in 5th grade orchestra will start the year reviewing the beginning of Essential Elements 2000 Book II. Our goal for the school year is to cover most of the material in book II. This will help prepare you for the middle school ensembles. The pages that I refer to are in the book I for violin, viola, cello and bass. Students can get play along tracks for the book at www.myeelibrary.com, and type in the code in the front of their book and your child will have access to all the play along tracks in the book and more.
At this point, it would be beneficial for students to purchase a shoulder rest. You can find them at www.sharmusic.com or www.swstrings.com Make sure that you purchase the size fits your instrument.Below are the lessons that we will follow this year with the 5th grade. Please make sure that you bring your book/folder/practice to each lesson. Stop back often to check what we are doing each week.Lesson -Seating, Attendance, Folders, Practice Cards, Room Procedures, Reading Music, Ensemble Work, New Orchestra Music.Lesson -Staple orchestra music into book. Go over goals for school year (finish book II) Book II page 2- 6 review D major, G major and C major and assign a solo for next week. Have students check finger placement and bow hand. Review C major and check low 2nd fingers. Students should be able to play Cross Roads or Buffalo Gals in C major with the CD as a solo for next week on Jessie James.Lesson - Play solo from previous week. Review dotted quarter notes and play them. Have students play Rondeau for next week.Camp KOK Practice orchestra musicLesson - Play solo from the previous week. Review how to play a C# and G# Play a solo for Song for Anne.Lesson - Dynamics Crescendo and Decrescendo solo on Fig TreeLesson -Practice counting 16th notes say them play them. Have students use the number system for the 16th notes 1e&a. Review the eighth and sixteenth note patters. Say them, play them. Assign a solo on Rhythm etude.
Lesson - Review rhythm from the previous week. Have students say dotted eighth and sixteenth note rhythm. try to play it with the correct bowing.Lesson -Introduce syncopation to students and have them clap the rhythm and then play the rhythm. Have students play syncopation on p. 19. Assign a solo for the next week children's shoes.Lesson - Play in 6/8 time and have students play slow 6/8 and fast 6/8. Have students play a solo on May time for next week. If time try vibrato.Lesson - Introduce triplets and have students play field song. Work on Side by side music with the 5th grade.Lesson Have students work on orchestra music. Check calendar for dates, times and concert information.Lesson - Work on Colonial Day music 4 + fiddle tunes are normally played during this event. IOWALesson - Prepare for the side by side with the middle school. Practice orchestra song played at the side by side. Make sure students are prepared to play the selection with the other 5th grade students.Lesson - Pass out holiday tunes and have students try to sight read. Talk about STARS and what to look for before playing a song.If time have students play triplets and read music with various meter changes.Lesson - Mixed meters p 30 ex 135 soloLesson - Have students play minor scales and talk about what kind of minor scales we use in class.Lesson - Work on Side by Side music with students and listen to solo on p. 31 ex. 142. Pass out all orchestra music and staple in in their book.Lesson -Students will finish the last song in the book by working on Peasants Cantata. Review orchestra music and have students play with correct bowings and fingers.Lesson -Students will talk about 6/8 time and Irish Folk Music. We will try to play the Swallow Tail Jig and have them read the notes and play them. Review orchestra music and have students play with correct bowings and fingers. 3/9Lesson - Introduce cut time and start working on America the Beautiful and Pomp and Circumstance. Review orchestra music and have students play with correct bowings and fingers. 3/16Lesson Students will work on orchestra music. Students will use proper bowings and fingers. Take a moment to talk about tuning instruments. How to use the fine tuner and pegs.Review orchestra music and have students play with correct bowings and fingers. 3/23Lesson Practice cut time in book and play a solo on a cut above. They should all have book 3. Practice a 2 octave. scale G major and practice the dotted rhythm in the back of the book.Lesson Work on 3rd position from Book III and have students practice their dotted rhythm and play the 16th note rhythms found in the back of the book. Have students practice orchestra music and review concert procedures for the spring concert held at NAI.Lesson Introduce students to the low 1st finger, the B flat. Show students where to place fingers on the strings. Show students equal spacing for the 1st 2nd and 3rd fingers. Demonstrate the sound of notes when played and have students echo. Show cello players open and closed hands. Talk about extensions with the left hand.Lesson - Play songs using a B flat and F natural.
