• Speaking Practice

             ESL students are assessed in 4 domains: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The below activities and resources will help you prepare your child for speaking tests.

    ** speaks in a way that makes sense for the situation (more “fancy” talk /less “friend” talk)

    **uses some different sentence patterns / kinds of sentences to show meaning (some short & long sentences)

     

    **uses “just right” words for what is seen in the picture some of the time

    Level 4

    Expanding

    ** speaks clearly & with confidence some of the time –some longer pauses/mistakes, but easy to understand meaning

    ** speaks in a way that makes sense for the situation (some “fancy” talk /some “friend” talk) 

    **uses a few different sentence patterns / kinds of sentences to show meaning (a few short & long sentences)

     

    **uses “just right” words for what is seen in the picture a little – sometimes cannot find the right word

    Level 3

    Developing

    ** speaks clearly & with confidence sometimes –longer pauses/ mistakes, a little hard to understand meaning

     

    **Tries to use different sentence patterns / kinds of sentences to show meaning (a few short & long sentences) –some repeats / mistakes

    **uses “just right” words for what is seen in the picture a little – has  trouble finding the right science/social studies/ math words

    Level 2

    Emerging

    ** only speaks clearly & with confidence a little –longer pauses/ mistakes, hard to understand meaning

     

    **”chunks of words” / uses the same kind of sentence again and again / repeats

    **Tries to use “just right” words for what is seen in the picture uses few science/social studies/ math words

    Level 1

    Entering

    ** can’t speak clearly & with confidence –long pauses/ many mistakes,very hard to understand meaning

    **uses only very easy words

     

    ***Speaking test tips: 

                 1.) Students will get about 30 seconds to 1 minute of recording time per answer

     

                  2.) Students can have as much time to prepare their answer as they want before hitting the "record" button. Please encourage your child to think through his/her answer before hitting "record". 

     

                  3.) Even if the answer could be a one-word answer (Example: Tell about the weather in this picture / response: "sunny"), please encourage your child to add more details ("It is sunny. There are only a few clouds in the sky. I don't think it will rain on this day. It is a good day to play outside. I can see kids riding their bikes and jumping rope. On            sunny days I like to play soccer with my friends that live near me.")
