    BrightBytes Survey
     
    The BrightBytes Survey is designed to assess four areas of educational technology: Classroom, Access, Skills, and Environment (CASE). The CASE framework identifies these four areas as essential factors affecting the improvement of learning through the use of technology. 
     
    In the Spring of 2014, North Allegheny School District administered the BrightBytes survey to students in grades 3 - 12 along with K - 12 educators. Four separate surveys were administered: an elementary student survey for grades 3 - 5; a middle school survey for students in grades 6 - 8; a high school student survey for grades 9 - 12; and a teacher/administrator survey.  The results of the survey designated North Allegheny as "Proficient" with a score of 1035 on a five-level CASE maturity scale: Beginning, Emerging, Proficient, Advanced, and Exemplary. The maturity score highlights an organization’s technology readiness and use in each of the framework’s domains, indicators, and variables. 
     
    In the Spring of 2016, the District re-adminstered the survey to students in grades 3 - 12, K - 12 educators, and parents of NA students. As displayed below, the District was once again designated in the "Proficient."  However, District's overall score increased by 36 points to 1071. NA's 2016 overall score is higher than the national and Pennsylvania scores as are all four domains scores. In 2014, the District scores were below the current state and national scores.  The greatest area of growth between the 2014 and 2016 surveys is in the area of Access (79 points), which is related to the FOCUS 2020 devices and the network upgrades to increase bandwidth and the expansion of wi-fi services.
     
    This past Spring (2017), the once again used the BrightBytes survey to gather data from students in grades 3 - 12 and K - 12 educators. As displayed below, the District was once again designated in the "Proficient." In one year, the District's overall score increased by 7 points to 1078. Once again, NA's 2017 overall score is higher than the national and Pennsylvania scores as are all four domains scores.
     
    As the District continues to monitor our use of educational technology using the CASE framework, the 2018 BrightBytes survey was taken by 5,843 students in grades 3 - 12 and  602 K - 12 educators. As with prior years, four separate surveys were administered: an elementary student survey for grades 3 - 5; a middle school survey for students in grades 6 - 8; a high school student survey for grades 9 - 12; and a teacher/administrator survey. The District's overall score increased by 14 points since the 2017 data collection for an overall score of 1092 which falls into the "Proficient" designation.  Collectively the District CASE score has grown by 55 point from the pre-FOCUS 2020 survey administration in 2014.

    All twelve schools have shown growth in the Classroom Domain. From the 2014 until 2018 the overall Classroom score has grown by 55 points and has moved from the Emerging designation to the Proficient designation. The District's score exceeds the national score by 17 points as most of the nation's schools are still in the Emerging category for their use of classroom technologies. All schools are showing increased use of online assessment tools. The individual measure that create the Classroom score included: Teacher and Student Use of the 4Cs, Teacher and Student Digital Citizenship, use of online assessment tools, and the use of assistive technology.

    Since the 2017 survey, school Access to technology continues to  expand for both teachers and students at school at every  building. Eleven schools scored in the Exemplary range for overall access. Since 2014 the District has experienced a 114 point increase in the Access score.  The District's score exceeds the state and national score by more than 45 points.

    Teacher and students skills have improved overall by 11 points; and Foundational Skills for teachers and students increased at every building.  Teacher Foundational Skills are Exemplary in all twelve buildings and teacher Online Skills also increased in every school. In ten buildings Teacher Multimedia Skills also grew. In ten schools Student Foundational Skills grew while Student Multimedia Skills grew in six buildings. The overall skill assesment is in the Advance category and 28 points higher than other Pennsylvania schools.

    The Environment domain continue to grow with ten schools scoring in the Advanced. In all tweleve buildings the Beliefs in value of educational technology in the Advanced range.  In the area of Professional Learning ten buildings have shown growth since the 2017 survey.

    About the BrightBytes Survey

    At the heart of BrightBytes is the CASE framework, a tool used by thousands of schools to improve the impact of technology on student learning. CASE is a research-based framework outlining the essential factors schools need in order to improve learning through the use of technology.

    There are four domains: Classroom, Access, Skills, and Environment. These are the essential factors needed for successful implementation of technology in the classroom. As shown below, each domain consists of success indicators – these are the areas from which the questions asked of educators, students, and parents are rooted.
